Vicky Cristina Barcelona

Synopsis: Oscar winner Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men), Oscar nominee Penelope Cruz (Volver) and Golden Globe nominee Scarlett Johansson (Match Point) light up the stunning city of Barcelona in this sexy romantic comedy. Vicky and Cristina are two young Americans spending a summer in Spain who meet a charming “Casanova” and his beautiful but volatile ex-wife. When they all become romantically entangled, the smoldering sparks begin to fly in hilarious fashion. Critics rave, “Vicky Cristina Barcelona is one of Woody Allen’s finest films, with bravura performances from its incredible cast” (Jeffrey Lyons, Reel Talk/NBC).

Vicky Cristina Barcelona 7.5

Woody Allen’s critical and commercial standout of recent years, ‘VCB’ is a romantic drama about two women who go to Barcelona – and whose personal lives are altered after meeting a local artist.

So what can one expect this time around? Well, it serves up Allen’s usual themes – but without the humour this time. And he makes use of a rarely-used (in his films, anyway) device: narration. It also doesn’t take place in New York and none of his usual cast are on screen.

This doesn’t make the movie fresh, however – it just fans the air a little bit. It’s definitely watchable, though, and definitely enjoyable. But it’s nothing remotely outstanding or memorable.

(well, at least I’m up to speed on Woody Allen now – I’m pleased to say that I’ve seen all his films at least once 🙂
