Get ready to beam up to a galaxy where autograph hounds abound, dentists drill in Federation garb and the debate over “Trekkies” vs. “Trekkers” rages on. Denise Crosby of Star Trek: The Next Generation hosts this often hilarious documentary about the Star Trek “fan-nomenon.” Interviewing hundreds of devoted fans and such Star Trek cast members as Lenoard Nimoy, Deforest Kelley, Nichelle Nichols, Walter Koenig, Kate Mulgrew and Brent Spiner, the film creates an entertaining and endearing portrait of the landmark series that has touched the lives of people around the world.

I’m a trekkie. Not a trekker. A trekkie. I’m not ashamed of it. I think that Star Trek has a lot to offer creatively, philosophically and, of course, as entertainage.

However, some trekkies/trekkers take their passion a little too far, to the point where reality and fiction blend in uncomfortable ways and their sanity simply has got to be questioned. confused

Frankly, I’d say the same thing of anyone who loses sight of real life as much as some of these people. I don’t just think that of the obsessive Star Trek fans. I think this of anyone who’s far too devoted to their favourite hobby.

A frequent argument that some trekkies use in this documentary is that sports fans wear their jerseys and no one says a thing – that there should be no reason for jeers when they decide to wear their Star Trek uniforms in public.

Sure. I get that. I agree, even. Not that I would do it myself, I should add. winking0002 Free Emoticons Winking

But, on the flipside, most sports fans don’t actually believe that, by being part of a fantasy league, they deserve a special title in real life – like those trekkies who are members of Star Trek clubs. Sports fans also usually don’t consider getting surgery so as to look like their idols. mad0071 Free Emoticons Anger

I mean, really, some trekkies take it too far. Much further than anyone’s gone before.

And that’s why we point and laugh as we call those particular trekkies NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRDS!!!!!!! tongue0024 Free Emoticons Sticking Out Tongue

Still, this documentary is as fascinating as it is riotous in its exploration of fandom. As with the documentary ‘Vinyl’, I’d recommend ‘Trekkies’ to any Star Trek fan or to anyone who wants to get a frank perspective on their own obsessions. happy0021 Free Emoticons Happy
