Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, vol. 3, by Philip K. Dick and Tony Parker 8.0
Well, this is the best volume yet! It takes a completely different course than ‘Blade Runner’ at this point, but I really enjoy where it’s going. It’s more dialogue-centric and delves into existentialist themes that are profound and thought-provoking.
Most of the action takes place in one setting, with only a handful of characters. It may be boring to fans of action-oriented comic books, but there is so much drama and tension in these pages that I found it to be a gripping page-turner.
The art is still an issue; there’s this persistent problem with proportions and angles that won’t disappear. I suspect that the artwork will likely continue to be subpar for the remainder of the series, unfortunately. I’m guessing that this was all hammered out in a short period of time, so we likely won’t see gradual improvements.
Still, there’s substance in those pages, beyond the penciling, inking and digital airbrushing. The art only helps to flesh out the world the author created, after all. That world has to be full of life already. And it is – artificial or not.
I’m really looking forward to the next volume at this point. I’d give this one an 8.5 if not for the artwork (I have to look at it as a whole, unfortunately).
