Christmas Vacation

Synopsis: “I laughed myself silly. Christmas Vacation jingled my bells.” -Pia Lindstrom, WNBC-TV/New York

This holiday season Clark Griswold vows his clan will enjoy “the most fun-filled old-fashioned family Christmas ever.” Before you can sing “Fa-la-la-la-lah,” he decks the halls with howls of folly in the perennial favorite National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.

Seeing is believing. There are 25,000 lights on the roof. An exploding turkey on the dining room table. A SWAT team taking siege outside. A festive supporting cast and a John Hughes script full of wit, heart and sheer goofiness. Yule love it!

Christmas Vacation 7.0

Without a doubt, ‘Christmas Vacation’ is the best entry in National Lampoon’s long-standing ‘Vacation’ franchise – which is not saying much when you consider it for a split second. winking0002 Free Emoticons Winking

The script is sharper, but it remains a low-brow affair. Thankfully, with John Hughes’s pen, at least we get a more cohesive whole. He even managed to bridge the vacation theme into a staycation by giving the Griswolds a road trip at the beginning of the film; the transition between the two is fluid and you don’t even notice or care that it won’t be an adventure this time around. Not bad. happy0024 Free Emoticons Happy

The acting gets as preposterous as in previous installments. In my estimation, Chevy Chase is a non-actor, and there were horribly clichéd scenes that only a master comedian could have gotten away with – and then only barely. With Chase in lieu of, we had painful moments devoid of laughter when it was obvious that the filmmakers were desperately trying to smack our funny bones. sad0133 Free Sad Emoticons

Still, I did derive some pleasure out of watching Christmas conventions get skewered in this prototypical ’80s American comedy, complete with a mega-cheesy moral at the end. It was done well enough to get a repeat viewing, even if I highly doubt that I will subject  other friends to this. After all, Christmas should be merry – not silent and deadly. tongue0024 Free Emoticons Sticking Out Tongue
