Knocked Up

Synopsis: The writer and director of The 40-Year-Old Virgin delivers another a hilarious hit comedy!

They say that opposites attract. Well, for slacker Ben (Seth Rogen) and career girl Alison (Katherine Heigl), that’s certainly the case – at least for one intoxicated evening. Two months and several pregnancy tests later, Ben and Alison go through a hysterically funny, anxious and heartwarming journey that leads to huge laughs in the most outrageous comedy of the year!

Knocked Up 7.0

You know, as surprising as it is considering how popular they are, I find Judd Apatow’s films (whether directed or written) pretty over-rated They’re decent enough films (‘Pineapple Express’ being a glaring exception!), so I can’t possibly rate them low; they usually have pretty good storytelling, good casts, good production (Although, like Kevin Smith’s films, Apatow’s don’t require much).

‘Knocked Up’ was extremely successful, and following on hot on the heels of his surprise hit ‘The 40 Year Old Virgin’, Apatow was on a streak that only cooled off recently, with ‘Funny People’. And I can see its appeal: it talks about very real human situations, it creates characters that are familiar and are at least two-dimensional, and it tosses in barrier-breaking humour.

…much like Kevin Smith’s own work, really. Except that I ADORE Smith’s stuff. And I wish I did really found Apatow’s movies funny. They’re not bad, but the humour doesn’t come fast enough and his films tend to be really long – for comedies. So you get your money’s worth, you’d still wish that the editor had left some stuff on the floor.

I think what makes his films enjoyable are his cast. He has a returning set of actors who are all quirky yet endearing in their own way – each of them bring a little sprinkle of magic that would otherwise be missing. Sadly, a few key ones (Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Jonah Hill) get on my nerves, and I tend to like many of them a lot more in other films (case-in-point: ‘I Love You, Man’ and ‘Bridesmaid’ – the latter of which, admittedly, was produced by him)

So, bottom line: ‘Knocked Up’ is good, but not great. If you like Apatow’s humour, though, you’re set: it’s wrapped up in a fairly solid package.
