Won Ton Soup, vol. 1, by James Stokoe 7.0
I don’t even remember how this fell into my lap, but it was a fun, if vacuous, little book. It’s basically the adventures of a space trucker who also happens to be one of the best chefs in the galaxy.
The book is filled with all sorts of silly humour, and it clearly doesn’t take itself too seriously, which is great. It is especially focused on food – however, since it’s science fiction, it’s hardly instructional (unlike the amazing ‘Oishinbo’ series).
The artwork is pretty detailed, but is mildly sloppy in its rendering. It has a pleasant style, but it feels like elaborate doodles in some ways.
Mind you, this is apparently Stokoe’s first book, and it is claimed that he made it in bits and pieces while moving around the country – so we should give him some slack.
Anyway, I’d love to see what he’ll be doing in the future. He certainly shows promise.
