Alien Apocalypse

Synopsis: Bruce Campbell stars as Dr. Ivan Hood, a cocky astronaut who returns to Earth after a 40-year cryogenic space nap to discover civilization destroyed and the planet enslaved by a race of giant alien termites. But when Hood is captured, he begins to plot the impossible: escape his captors, track down the long-missing president and build a rebel army to destroy these insect overlords. In a desperate time ruled by head-chomping bugs that spew green crap, can one brave hero lead a not-very-bright world to freedom?

Renee O’Connor (Gabrielle of Xena: Warrior Princess) and Peter Jason (Deadwood) co-star in this Sci-Fi Channel sensation written and directed by Josh Becker (Running Time, Thou Shalt Not Kill… Except) that became the highest-rated original movie in network history!

Alien Apocalypse 2.0

What do you get when you cross the original ‘Planet of the Apes’ with ‘Battlefield Earth’ and produce it on a shoe-string budget?

‘Alien Apocalypse’, that’s what.

…and not much more, quite frankly.

With a title like this, and with Bruce Campbell in the lead, one would have to expect a cheesy sci-fi actioner. But, is this film just one of them, or is it supposed to mock this type of low budget sci-fi production – in a “wink-wink” sort of way?

Problem is… even after watching it, there’s no real way of knowing.

Some of the jokes are so bad that they had to be written on purpose, some of the costumes (like the wigs and facial hair) are such eyesores that they had to be made this way, the editing is so dated and amateurish at times that it had to be done as a joke, …etc. I mean, really, it’s impossible to list the number of continuity errors, flaws in logic, and other problems with this film in one sitting – it’s a smorgasbord of cinematic refuse.

Yet, despite having suffered completely through it, I remain uncertain; it’s just so bad that it’s beyond words and it’s hard to keep perspective on it. Seriously, this is one of the worst films I’ve seen in recent time (evidently, it doesn’t quite best ‘Orgy of the Dead’ – but it’s getting there).

Sigh… one just has to wonder how this film could come to be. And why.

And I may never find out.

So, basically, even though you may like cheesy sci-fi b-movies, even though you may have a penchant for Bruce Campbell, even though your curiosity may now be nagging at you, please heed my (and many others’) advice: steer clear of ‘Alien Apocalypse’!

What do you think?
