Synopsis: There’s no such thing as an overnight success. Brantley Foster took two weeks.
Can a kid from Kansas come to New York to conquer the business world and maneuver his way from the mailroom to the boardroom in a matter of weeks? Michael J. Fox proves it can be done in this very funny lampoon of corporate business life. Fresh out of college, he’s determined to climb New York’s corporate ladder in record time by masquerading as an up-and-coming executive, even though he’s really the new mail boy. However, Fox’s plans begin to go awry when the boss’s wife falls in love with him and he falls in love with a junior executive, who also happens to be the boss’s mistress.

I decided to re-watch this last night as I was going to bed to remind myself whether or not it deserved to be listed in my rom-com list (see Message Board for details).
While it is initially about the career-mindedness of the main character, he does mention from the onset that he’s looking for love and his pursuit of Helen Slater’s character becomes central to the story. So, in my mind, it does apply – even if it is a tad unconventional on some levels.
The movie itself is so very ’80s, though (Ooooh, yeah! Chookooh chookah!!!)! But, iIf you like Michael J. Fox, then you will find it charming and funny nonetheless – he can be disarming enough that you will be able overlook the contrived parts of the story. I had forgotten how open-minded some of the characters can be about relationships, though – I must sayt that this was a bit of a surprise
Would I enjoy this movie if I saw it for the first time today (as opposed to being brainwashed by it time and time again back in the day)? Unlikely – it’s probably far too dated to settle back and just enjoy it without being critical. Thankfully, I’m in a position to be pretty forgiving of this one – I’m just not sure that most people would be.
…and that’s the ugly truth. Pfffft!
I watched this a few years back with my mom, who loves it, and it was awesome. Cute, fun movie. MJF always helps!:)
Yeah, it’s not great film, but it’s fun – all thanks to MJF 🙂
